Sleep Apnea & Health Risks: Free Lecture By Dr. Schmidt at Columbus Health & Fitness Expo
SleepApneaDisorder/[Press Release]/-Dr. Markus Schmidt will review common sleep disorders and cardiovascular consequences of sleep apnea on Saturday, August 21st at 1:00 p.m. at the Health & Fitness Expo held at the Columbus Convention Center. The lecture is free and opened to the public attending the event.
“Many residents in Central Ohio suffer from a sleep problem or disorder that affects not only their quality of life, but also their daytime performance and can have profound consequences on their overall mental and physical health,” says Dr. Markus Schmidt, medical director at the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute. “Sleep is a vital element for our well-being, and addressing underlying conditions that contribute to insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea, restless nights or other sleep disturbances can completely change one’s life,” he adds.
As many as 19.5% of the US population suffers from excessive sleepiness, 17% of middle age Americans from sleep apnea, 10% from chronic insomnia, and 10% from restless legs syndrome among others. Consequences from untreated sleep disorders range from serious health threats to safety concerns for the overall community.
“Central Ohioans need to be aware of the health risks associated with sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea,” says Dr. Schmidt. “It is the number one known cause of high blood pressure, it triples the risk for having a heart attack or a stroke for people with moderate to severe apnea; it increases the risk for developing diabetes, depression, headaches, memory impairment and erectile dysfunction in men.”
Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute (OSMI) is a comprehensive sleep disorders center addressing all sleep disorders for adults and children. Founded in 1989 by Helmut Schmidt, first president of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, the center establishes high standards of sleep medicine care to adequately evaluate, diagnose and treat patients to ensure maximum success in treatment outcome.
